Behind a strong second half, the Dodge City women's basketball team overcame a double-figure deficit to win by double digits at Colby, 68-52.
The win moves the Conquistadors to 24-3 on the season and 19-2 in KJCCC action; the victory also secures a top three finishes in the KJCCC and a first-round bye and quarterfinal home playoff game in the Region 6 tournament.
It was a sluggish start to the day for the Conqs falling behind 4-0 over the first three and a half minutes and then trailed 7-2 five minutes into the game. A
Becca Unruh three-pointer with three minutes left in the first quarter pulled the Conqs to within one-point at 9-8 but Colby scored the final five points of the quarter and led 14-8 after the first 10 minutes. The Colby Trojan lead grew to 13 at 26-13 in the second quarter but the Conqs responded as
Savi Mi hit a three-pointer to make it 28-25 and ultimately the Conqs pulled with four by halftime trailing 34-30. In the second half, the lead finally flipped to the Conqs on a
Tayah Morgan three-pointer making it 38-36 two minutes into the third quarter. The Conqs would outscore Colby 18-7 in the third quarter and then 20-11 in the fourth to earn the double-figure victory 68-52.
Conqs defense would ultimately hold Colby to 31.6% shooting and forced 25 turnovers, while offensively shooting 41.9% hitting 13 threes in the contest.
Shorna Preston paced the Conqs with 20 points on 7-13 shooting and grabbed eight rebounds. The Conqs bench came up big with 31 points with Mi and
Morgan Ruff each recording 10 points. Mi finished with 10 points on 4-8 shooting and grabbed four rebounds, while Ruff was 4-6 from the field recording her 10 points.
Conqs return home to continue the season taking on Independence on Wednesday, February 26th at 5:30 pm.
