Women's Basketball Grabs Road Win Over Barton

Dodge City women's basketball picked up their 22nd win of the season as they beat the Barton Cougars for the sixth straight time in the series, winning 70-47.

The Conquistadors with the win improved to 22-3 on the season and 17-2 in KJCCC action, while also making the Conqs 9-2 on the road this season.

After the initial bucket of the game by Barton, the Conqs would score 13 straight points to establish control at 13-2 nearly five minutes into the contest. However, despite the 13-0 run, the Conqs would only lead by three at 18-15 at the end of the first quarter of action. A 4-0 spurt to open the second stanza gave the Conqs a seven-point lead at 22-15 and then the lead made its way to double figures at 29-19 with just under three minutes remaining in the first half. The Conqs would head into halftime up 35-26 and in the second half, the Conqs would continually fend off the Cougars while also extending the lead. By the end of the third quarter, the Conqs' lead sat at 17 and would surpass 20 in the fourth as the Conqs declawed the Cougars with a 70-47 win.

The Conqs shot just 37.3% from the field but would shoot 40% in the second half with seven three-pointers in the second half and 11 in the game. Defensively the Conqs stymied Barton holding them to 34.3% shooting including 1-11 from three-point range.

Shorna Preston continues to be a Swiss army knife on the floor for the Conqs doing it all as she recorded a career-high 25 points on 10-13 shooting going 3-4 from three-point range. She also grabbed 14 rebounds for her 15th double-double of the season, adding seven assists, six steals, and two blocks. Tayah Morgan chipped in 11 points, while Becca Unruh and Savi Mi each had eight points off the bench.

Conqs return home to continue the season as they will host Fort Hays Tech Northwest on Wednesday, February 19th at 5:30 pm.
