Dodge City women's basketball struggled from three-point range on the road falling to Seward County in KJCCC action 55-52.
The loss drops the Conquistadors to 21-3 on the season and 16-2 in KJCCC action.
The day would be one of the lowest-scoring games under Head Coach,
Landon Steele during his tenure at Dodge City as both teams struggled to find offense early. The Conqs would trail most of the first quarter until late when they snagged an 11-9 advantage after the first 10 minutes. In the second stanza, the Conqs would extend their lead to as high as 11 at 30-19 late in the first half on a
Layla-J Cameron three-pointer and ultimately led 30-22 at intermission. In the second half the Conqs continually fended off Seward's advances through most of the third quarter, but the Saints cut the Conqs lead to three at 43-40 entering the fourth quarter. In the first minute of the fourth Seward County drained a three-pointer to tie the game and then the Saints took the lead. The Conqs flipped the lead back to 51-49 with 6:30 remaining and then both teams would go scoreless for three and a half minutes before
Shorna Preston split a pair of free throws to make it 52-49. Seward County would do the rest of the scoring in the final two minutes of the game finishing on a 6-0 run as the Conqs' late efforts to tie or take the lead came up short leading to a 55-52 loss on the road.
The Conqs shot just 36.5% from the field and went only 2-20 from three-point range while also having 17 turnovers. Defensively the Conqs held Seward County to just 36.4% shooting for the contest.
Preston recorded her 14th double-double of the season for the Conqs finishing with 19 points on 6-12 shooting and grabbed 11 rebounds, while also adding seven blocks.
Mia Jordan had a solid performance finishing with 12 points and seven rebounds on the day.
With a bye week on Wednesday, the Conqs will look to prepare for the final stretch of the regular season, which starts on Saturday, February 15th, when they travel to Great Bend to take on Barton at 5:30 p.m.
