Baseball Opens Season 4-0 Sweeping Series With Dawson

The 2025 season is underway, and it started at home for Dodge City baseball as new head coach JM Kelly led his crew into action against Dawson for a four-game series at Cavalier Field in Dodge City.

The Conquistadors open the season 4-0 as they beat Dawson 9-0 and 12-0 in five innings on Saturday and then picked up a 10-0 five inning win and 8-6 victory on Sunday.

The Conqs hit the road to continue the season as they travel to Hobbs, New Mexico to take on New Mexico for two games and Weatherford for one on Friday and Saturday, February 14th and 15th.

Game 1 - Won 9-0 vs Dawson
Conqs opened the 2025 season in a strong way, facing the minimum against Dawson in the top of the 1st and then sending eight to the plate in the bottom of the first to score four runs on three walks, a hit batter, and an error. In the second, the Conqs tacked on another run and would lead 5-0 when Dawson threatened with a bases-loaded situation in the fourth that the Conqs worked out of by turning a double play. The Conqs tacked on three runs in the fifth and one more in the sixth to secure the 9-0 victory.

On the mound, Connor Lovin earned the win by tossing five innings of scoreless ball, giving up just four runs and one hit batter while striking out five. David Bosque capped the game, earning the save throwing the final two innings and recording four strikeouts.

At the plate, Cameron Stukenborg was 2-2 with a run scored, RBI, and a walk, while Freddy Oquendo added a 1-2 showing with a double, a walk, hit by pitch, and two runs scored. Jose Alfonso finished 1-2 with two RBI, a walk, and a run scored.

Game 2 - Won 12-0 vs Dawson (5 innings)
After a scoreless first inning in game two of the series, it was all Conqs the rest of the day, getting on the board with two runs in the second before an outburst of eight runs in the third. In the third inning, Josh McGuin had a two-RBI double, Juan Concepcion had a three-RBI double, and Seth Brown added an RBI double in the frame. A two-RBI double by Alfonso extended the lead for the Conqs to 12-0 in the fourth, and the Conqs shut the door in the fifth to win 12-0 in five innings as McGuin made a spectacular catch in foul territory flipping over the third base dugout fence to finish the game.

Will David was strong on the mound, earning the win by tossing four scoreless innings as the starter, giving up just one hit, two walks, and one hit batter while striking out five. Wyatt Sadlier tossed the final inning, facing just three batters.

McGuinn led the Conqs offense, going 2-3 with three RBI, a double, and two runs scored. Ben Longoria added a 1-2 game with a walk, two runs scored, and a hit by pitch, while Brown was 2-3 with two runs scored, an RBI, and a hit by pitch.

Game 3 - Won 10-0 vs Dawson (Game 3)
Day two of the weekend saw the Conqs control things early again scoring a run in the first then four more runs in the second. A two RBI single by Brown and RBI single by Josh McClintock that highlighted the second inning. Conqs tallied another run in the third and finished the game in the fifth with four runs as McGuin had an RBI double and McClintock notched a two RBI single in the inning as the Conqs won 10-0 in five innings.

Stukenborg three all five innings to earn the win as he gave up just one hit and struck out three.

McClintock and McGuin paced the Conqs at the plate as they went 2-4 with two runs scored, three RBI, and a stolen base, along with 2-3 with two RBI, a triple, and a double, respectively. Bynum Martinez went 2-3 with two runs scored, while Cory Chostner was hit by a pitch twice and scored two runs.

Game 4 - Won 8-6 vs Dawson (Game 4)
The Conqs capped the weekend with the close game of the series, coming from behind to secure the series sweep. Dawson tallied the first run of the series in the top of the first, but in the bottom of the inning, the Conqs answered as McClintock led the inning off with a double and came around to score. In the second, Dawson scratched another run across and then one more in the third and fourth innings, while the Conqs tallied three in the third, leading to a 4-4 tie after four innings. The bottom of the fifth saw the Conqs snag the lead back with a run at 5-4, but Dawson answered with a two-run home run in the sixth, making it 6-5. In the bottom of the sixth, the Conqs pushed back and capitalized on three walks to score three to lead 8-6, and the Conqs stopped a scoring opportunity in the top of the seventh by Dawson to earn the 8-6 win.

Bosque earned the win in relief, tossing the final 1.2 innings, giving up just two hits, and striking out two. Manuel Burguesa, Lane Benavides, and Cameron Stewart all saw action on the mound.
