Dodge City women's basketball remained unbeaten on the season with a 64-48 victory at home versus Colby, overcoming the lowest shooting percentage of the season.
The win moves the Conquistadors to 9-0 on the season and 4-0 in Jayhawk conference play. The nine-game win streak to open the season is the longest streak to start a season for the Conqs since the 2004-05 season. Head coach
Landon Steele picked up his 80th career KJCCC win and 115th career win at Dodge City.
After falling behind 4-0 to open the game, the Conqs scored the next 13 points to lead 13-4 against Colby halfway into the first quarter. Conqs would finish out the first quarter with a three-pointer by
Mailey Cunningham to lead 20-11. Colby would stay within single digits, even making it a three-point game at 23-20 with 4:30 left in the first half, but the Conqs capped the first half on a 13-1 run to lead 36-21 at intermission. In the second half, the Conqs worked the lead to 20 and used that separation to keep Colby from mounting a comeback, earning a 64-48 victory.
The Conqs' defense forced 24 Colby turnovers and held the Trojans to 38% shooting and just 13% from three-point range, while shooting only 33.8% from the field, marking the first time this season the team has shot under 40%. The Conqs only had eight turnovers in the matchup and had 13 steals.
Four Conqs finished the night with double figures, led by
Jolie Mantz, who tallied 15 points on 6-13 shooting.
