For the second straight game, the Dodge City women's basketball team picked up a win over a ranked opponent, using some hot shooting to down #18 Hutchinson 79-57.
The win keeps the Conquistadors undefeated on the season, improving to 11-0 overall and 6-0 in KJCCC action. The victory is the fourth for the Conqs in the last seven meetings with Hutchinson, all four by 14 points or more.
To open the contest, the lead would change hands multiple times but never higher than two-points, until
Jade Célérier netted a layup to give the Conqs a 14-11 lead. That lead worked itself to a 19-11 advantage for the Conqs behind a 10-0 run capped by a
Sofia Ahmed layup. With just under two minutes left in the first quarter,
Mailey Cunningham drained a three-pointer to make it a 10-point advantage for the Conqs at 27-17, and they would lead 29-18 after the first ten minutes. Behind 52.9% shooting and seven first-half three-pointers, the Conqs carried a 46-31 lead into halftime.
The strong shooting performance carried over into the second half for the Conqs after a slow start to the third quarter they settled back in while Hutchinson would struggle in the second half, shooting just 26.5% and 1-11 from three-point range as the Conqs would secure the 79-57 victory.
On the night, the Conqs shot 48.3% netting 11 three-pointers while dishing out 23 assists on 29 made field goals. The Conqs also won the rebounding battle by seven and forced 17 Hutchinson turnovers while holding the Blue Dragons to 34.5% shooting.
Manuela Piljevic recorded her first career double-double, finishing with 15 points and 13 rebounds, while adding four assists. Ahmed registered a career-high 12 points on 6-7 shooting, adding two blocks, while
Charlie Melksham chipped in 15 points going 7-8 from the free throw line. Célérier added 10 points on 4-6 shooting while both
Savi Mi and
Saje Evans each tallied nine points.
The Conqs will take on Pratt on Saturday, December 13th at 2:00 pm in the final game before the holiday break.
