Despite a strong start to the day, the Dodge City football team dropped a late-season matchup against #8 Coffeyville at home 42-10.
The loss drops the Conquistadors to 1-8 on the season and 1-4 in KJCCC action, with six of the eight losses coming to teams currently ranked in the Top 15 nationally.
The Conqs would open the day strong going on a 12-play drive covering 75 yards spanning over seven minutes and capping it with a 22-yard touchdown run by
Derick Shanks Jr. to make it 7-0 early. The 7-0 lead would hold up going into the second quarter, and Coffeyville, on their first drive of the second stanza, would find their way into the endzone on a 13-yard pass to draw even at 7-7 with 7:32 left in the first half. The Conqs would fumble on their next offensive play, and Coffeyville would net a 25-yard field goal seven plays later to make it 10-7. Next drive for the Conqs would see another fumble by the Conqs; this time, Coffeyville would scoop it up and return it 31 yards for a touchdown, leading to a 17-7 Coffeyville lead.
In the second half, things unraveled for the Conqs, starting with a blocked punt that Coffeyville recovered in the endzone early in the third quarter. The Red Ravens of Coffeyville would add a 51-yard field goal and score two more touchdowns in the third quarter to lead 42-7 entering the fourth quarter. The Conqs would get on the board again late in the fourth as
Eduardo Solis split the uprights for a 28-yard field goal, but the Conqs would fall 42-10.
The Conqs would out gain Coffeyville 237 to 211 total yards, but gave up the defensive and special teams score.
A nine-tackle day by
Lovell Vereen paced the Conqs on the day, while
Amarius Perdue tallied eight tackles with 1.5 tackles for loss.
Braxton Clark was 12-16 for 118 yards, while Shanks Jr. ran for 52 yards on 12 carries and a touchdown.
David Ramos caught seven passes for 67 yards.
The Conqs will wrap up the season on Saturday, November 15th at 1:00pm against #11 Butler.
