Football Wraps Up Season at Home Against Butler

Dodge City capped the 2025 season with a tough 30-10 loss to #13 Butler marking seventh of 10 games this season the Conquistadors battled a Top 15 opponent.

The Conqs saw Butler open the contest by taking early control as the Grizzlies took the opening drive 75 yards on 10 plays scoring on a 32-yard rushing touchdown to take the early 7-0 lead. After a quick first drive by the Conqs, the defense forced a three-and-out by Butler and got on the board in the next drive off a 37-yard field goal by Adam Pineiro. The second quarter would nearly be a stalemate, with the only points coming on a 31-yard field goal by Butler to give them a 10-3 lead which they took into halftime.

In the second half, the Conqs' defense was stout, but Butler was able to maneuver the ball enough to get 13 points on the board to extend their lead to a 23-3 advantage. Grizzlies added a touchdown in the fourth quarter, but the Conqs continued to fight as Edwin Merriweather III snuck a ball past a Butler defender into a streaking Carson Spoonts' hand, who took it 40 yards for a touchdown with just under ten minutes remaining in the contest. The Conqs would be unable to get on the board again, falling 30-10.

Defense held Butler under 300 total yards as the Grizzlies. Had just 276 yards, but the Conqs had just 250 yards.

Leading the defense was Anthony Mattison who recorded nine tackles, while Nate Gunderson tallied seven tackles. The trio of Lovell Vereen, Tavarez Edwards, and Godfred Anni all recorded five tackles each, while Anni had 1.5 sacks.

Merriweather was 15-30 passing for 196 yards with a touchdown. On the ground Derick Shanks Jr. ran for 66 yards on 12 carries, while three receivers had 50+ yards. Santana Fleming caught three passes for 58 yards, David Ramos snagged four passes for 56 yards, and Spoonts grabbed three passes for 50 yards and a touchdown.

The Conqs with the loss wrap up the 2025 season finishing 1-9 and 1-5 in KJCCC action.
