Women's Basketball Uses Strong Second Half to Rout Cloud County

A strong second half, which included a 34-point third quarter (the fifth time this season with a 30+ point quarter), propelled the Dodge City women's basketball team to a road victory, 97-71, over Cloud County.

The win moves the #1 Conquistadors to 8-0 on the season and 3-0 in KJCCC action. The eight straight wins to open the season is the best start to a season since the 2015-16 season, when the program also won eight games to start. Conqs have also won nine straight against Cloud County in the series with the victory.

Trading buckets to open the contest, it would be tied 7-7 just over two and a half minutes into the contest when the Conqs would mount an 8-0 run to lead 15-7 and take control. Cloud County would get back within four at 15-11, but the Conqs capped the first quarter outscoring the Thunderbirds 7-2 to lead 22-13. A three-pointer by Manuela Piljevic early in the second quarter gave the Conqs a double-figure lead at 25-13, but Cloud County stuck around and would put together a 25-17 second quarter to make it a 39-38 ballgame at halftime.

The second half would see the Conqs score 34 points in the third quarter, marking the fifth time this year the Conqs surpassed 30 points in a quarter. An 8-0 run opened the second half for the Conqs, and by midway through the third quarter, the lead was to double figures as the Conqs led 55-43 with 5:23 left in the third. The lead ultimately ballooned to 20 behind a 34-15 third quarter as the Conqs shot 70% from the floor in the quarter. Conqs finished strong in the fourth, adding 24 points to post a season high 97 points in the 97-71 win over Cloud County.

Conqs had their best shooting performance of the season, making 36 field goals on 52.9% shooting, while going 15-19 from the free throw line. The ladies dished out 23 assists, controlled the boards 41-29 and held the Thunderbirds to 36.5% shooting.

Five Conqs scored double figures on the day, including a career-high 22 points on 8-9 shooting, going 4-5 from three-point range for Savi Mi. Mailey Cunningham chipped in her best performance with 15 points on 6-8 shooting and grabbed seven rebounds. Piljevic tallied 13 points and seven rebounds, while Jolie Mantz tallied 12 points. Saje Evans added 10 points on the day, while Jade Célérier was dishing out dimes with 10 assists and added eight points.

Conqs are back on their home floor next, taking on Colby on Wednesday, December 3rd at 5:30pm before travelling to take on #25 Coffeyville on the road on Saturday, December 6th.
