Women's Basketball Opens Conference Play With Road Win Over Barton

Dodge City women's basketball kept things rolling as they opened Jayhawk Conference play with a 65-51 win over Barton to improve to 6-0 on the season and 1-0 in KJCCC action.

The win marks the eighth straight over Barton in the series and is the fourth time under Head Coach Landon Steele that the Conquistadors have won a conference opener in his five seasons coaching the Conqs.

The night would start cold for the Conqs as just over four and a half minutes went by before the first basket for the Conqs, but they only fell behind 4-1 during that span. The Conqs' defense kept it tight early, and a Mailey Cunningham three-pointer tied the game at 11-11 in the final minute of the first quarter. The second stanza would remain tight, and both teams held the lead with the Conqs taking their first lead at 14-13 behind a Saje Evans three-pointer. Barton worked to their largest lead at six with four minutes remaining in the first half, up 26-20; however, the Conqs outscored Barton 6-2 to end the first half and lead 31-28 at halftime.

Barton opened the second half with the initial basket, but the Conqs countered with an 8-0 run to lead by nine only to see the Cougars of Barton remain close as it was a four-point game at the end of the third at 44-40. A 12-0 run started the fourth quarter for the Conqs with Savi Mi scoring the first seven points of the run, and the Conqs' lead ballooned to double figures as they would put the game away, securing a 65-51 win on the road.

As a team, the Conqs shot just 40.3% but held Barton under 40% shooting while forcing 24 Cougar turnovers and recording 16 steals.

Savi Mi led the Conqs with 16 points on 6-8 shooting, adding four rebounds, four steals, and four assists. Jolie Mantz chipped in 12 points as the only other Conq to record double figures, while Manuela Piljevic and Jade Célérier each contributed nine points. Célérier filled out her stat line with five rebounds, three assists, and three steals.
Conqs are set for their first home KJCCC matchup of the season on Saturday, November 22nd, when they take on Cowley at 1:00pm.
