The Dodge City men's soccer team battled through some adversity as the second half of Jayhawk conference play started with a battle against the Coffeyville Red Ravens.
While the Conquistadors played a man down for nearly 60 minutes of the contest and had a lead, the Conqs would settle for a tough 1-1 tie. The tie moves the Conqs to 7-1-3 on the season and 3-1-2 in KJCCC action, while remaining unbeaten at home with a 4-0-1 record.
The Conqs would be on the attack early and would get several solid looks offensively but would be unable to break through as the match remained scoreless. In the 32nd minute, the game would change as the Conqs would see a red card against them, leading them to play a man down for the final 60 minutes of the contest. Coffeyville would play a stall tactic as the Conqs packed in defensively late in the first half, but the Conqs would send pressure and take the ball, and in the 34th minute,
David Garcia would score his second goal of the season, giving the Conqs the 1-0 lead.
Conqs would take the 1-0 advantage into halftime, and both teams would look to game plan for the second half. In the second half, the Conqs' offense opportunities were far and few between as Coffeyville used the advantage of being a man up to be on the attack and would fire off 13 shots with eight on goal. Behind strong play as a unit, the Conqs would stop and stymie the Coffeyville offense enough to keep them off the scoreboard until a late corner was awarded in the 88th minute, leading to the equalizer for Coffeyville. The Conqs would hold off the Red Ravens from adding another and settled in for a tough 1-1 tie.
In goal,
Rensho Ishikawa tallied eight saves, with seven coming in the second half when Coffeyville had 13 of 16 shots in the matchup.
Up next, the Conqs will square off with rival Garden City on the road on Wednesday, October 8th, scheduled for a 7:00 pm kick.
