For the second straight match and the fourth time this season, the Dodge City men's soccer team faced off with a Top 10 opponent, and for the second time this season, it was the Barton Cougars.
After getting the best of Barton at home earlier this season, the Conquistadors would push the Cougars to the wire on the road but ultimately fall 3-2. The loss drops the Conqs to 8-3-3 on the season and 3-3-2 in KJCCC play.
Both teams put forth opportunities in the first half, but it was not until the 38th minute that the first goal was scored, as Barton broke through and would take that 1-0 advantage into halftime. In the second half, the contest featured four more goals combined. Barton looked to have taken a firmer hold on the game in the 47th minute shortly into the second half as they tallied their second goal. The Conqs would not give up getting a free kick by
David Garcia, who found
Keitu Mphomane in the box for a goal. Less than two minutes later, Barton pushed the lead back to two with their third goal of the day, but the Conqs countered just shortly after as
Soma Kanazawa tallied his seventh goal of the season to make it a 3-2 contest. The Conqs would have some chances down the stretch to draw even, but Barton held the Conqs off the board, finishing the contest 3-2.
It was nearly even in shots for the contest as the Conqs outshot Barton 15-14, with Barton outshooting the Conqs 10-5 in the first half, and the second half was 10-4 Conqs in shots. Kanazawa and Mphomane each tallied a goal while
Brian Hara and Garcia had assists. The assist for Garcia is his 13th career assist, which breaks the school record.
The Conqs are back in action at home on Sunday, October 19th, against Seward County at 3:00 pm.
