The gauntlet to start the 2025 season continued for Dodge City as they entered the sixth game of the season with all four of their losses to teams ranked in the NJCAA Top 10 and played host to #1 Hutchinson in the latest action.
The Conquistadors would trail just by 11 at halftime but ultimately fall 44-3 at home to the Blue Dragons of Hutchinson. The loss drops the Conqs to 1-5 on the season and 1-2 in KJCCC action.
The Conqs would open the contest on offense and move the ball into Hutchinson territory before having to punt. The Blue Dragons would capitalize on a pair of Dodge City penalties and find the endzone on their first drive. After a Conqs interception, the Blue Dragons on the next play visited the endzone and took a 14-0 lead. Late in the first quarter, the Conqs started to move the ball and worked into the redzone, nearly scoring a touchdown on a
Derick Shanks Jr. run, but it was called back upon review, and the Conqs settled for a 27-yard field goal by
Adam Pineiro. The Conq defense would stop Hutchinson on two fourth downs in the redzone and hold the game at 14-3 entering halftime.
The Conq defense was stout again to open the second half, forcing a Hutchinson punt, but the Conqs would be pinned back deep when they took over on offense. With the Conqs on the goal line, Hutchinson brought pressure, which led to a safety. Then, the Blue Dragons returned the kick 84 yards for a touchdown, growing their lead to 23-3. The Conqs would struggle the rest of the way as Hutchinson added to their lead, finishing the contest at 44-3.
Conq's defense would only give up 373 total yards to Hutchinson and force three turnovers as
Tavarez Edwards and
Lovell Vereen each had an interception, while
Micah Williams forced a fumble, and it was recovered by
Godfred Anni.
Nate Gunderson was strong again as he tallied 15 tackles with 3.5 tackles for loss, while
Anthony Mattison had a 10-tackle day with a sack and two tackles for a loss.
Corion Powers added a nine-tackle day, while Vereen added eight tackles with his interception.
Offensively, the Conqs managed just 147 total yards with 122 through the air.
David Ramos caught four passes for 56 yards.
The Conqs will hit the road next week to wrap up the KJCCC versus ICCAC crossover play as the Conqs will take on Ellsworth in Iowa Falls, Iowa, with an 11:00 am kickoff.
