Football Stumbles On the Road Against Ellsworth

Dodge City football traveled to Iowa Falls, Iowa, to wrap up KJCCC crossover play with ICCAC teams, taking on Ellsworth. The Conquistadors struggled to get going offensively and fell 21-13 on the road. The loss drops the Conqs to 1-6 on the season.

After a three-and-out to open the game, the Conqs would see Ellsworth mount a drive into the redzone on their first offensive drive of the game, and the Panthers pounced on the lead, getting a touchdown to go up 7-0. It would remain 7-0 throughout the rest of the first half as the Conqs' defense would record several fourth-down stops of Ellsworth and get a pair of interceptions from Jamari Mosley, while the Conqs offense was unable to put together a scoring drive, leading to a 7-0 score at intermission. In the third quarter, the Conqs broke through, exploiting a gap in the Panthers' defense as Edwin Merriweather III hit Mahki Whitney for a 55-yard touchdown pass and, with the extra point, tied the game at 7-7.

In the fourth quarter, an interception by the Conqs would give Ellsworth a short field, which they took advantage of scoring their second touchdown to lead 14-7 with 10: 41 remaining. Conqs, however, had a quick and big answer as Carson Spoonts busted a 90-yard kickoff return to the house for a Conq touchdown, but a missed extra point kept the Conqs behind at 14-13. With 3:05 left, Ellsworth took advantage of another short field scoring against to extend their lead and would ultimately claim the 21-13 victory.

On defense, the Conqs had a double-digit tackle game from Nate Gunderson and Lovell Vereen, who recorded 11 and 10 tackles, respectively. Mosley finished with four tackles and two interceptions. On offense, Mahki Whitney caught a pair of passes for 90 yards with a touchdown.

The Conqs head into the bye week looking to regroup and prepare for the final three games of the season, which will pick back up on Saturday, November 1st when they take on Independence on the road.
