Women's Basketball Wins 12th Straight With Victory Over Colby

Behind a strong first half, the Dodge City women's basketball team remained unbeaten in Jayhawk Conference play dispatching of Colby 66-48 at home.

The victory moves the Conquistadors to 14-1 on the season and 9-0 in KJCCC action, while extending the Conqs' win streak to 12 games on the season.

Colby opened the night with the initial bucket and led 2-0 over the first two and half minutes but a Shorna Preston three-point got the Conqs on the board and the 3-2 lead. That 3-2 advantage turned into a 10-2 advantage for the Conqs as Colby went scoreless for six minutes in the first quarter. Conqs lead worked up to as high as 11 in the first quarter and was 15-6 at the end of the first 10 minutes of action. A 14-0 run by the Conqs would be how the second quarter started as Colby would not score until the 5:08 mark of the quarter finally getting some points in the frame on free throws, but the Conqs led 29-6 before the free throws. By intermission, the Conqs owned their largest lead at 40-14. The Conqs held Colby to just 17.4% shooting in the first half while shooting 46.4% themselves.

In the second half Colby generated a few more opportunities for themselves as the Conqs would turn the ball over in the third quarter leading to an 18-9 third quarter by the Trojans. The Conqs would hold off the advances of Colby the rest of the way and snatch the 66-48 win at home.

The Conqs finished the night shooting 44% from the floor while Colby shot just 30.9%. Conqs overcame 24 turnovers as they won the rebounding battle 40-25 and continued to distribute the ball well with 17 assists on 22 made field goals.

Layla-J Cameron led the Conqs finishing with 19 points on 6-11 shooting and 6-6 free throws while adding five rebounds and two assists. Preston added 13 points and nine rebounds, along with three assists, three steals, and two blocks. Tayah Morgan tallied 13 points, while Konstantina Mantziori chipped in eight points. Morane Dossou had another big rebounding performance with 10 boards, while Becca Unruh scored six points and Savi Mi finished with five points, seven rebounds, and five assists.

The Conqs are back in action as they hit the road on Saturday, January 11th to take on Independence at 2:00 pm.
