The third quarter and second half has been huge for the Dodge City women's basketball team all season and it was again as they quenched the fire of the #1 team in the country taking down the defending NJCAA National champions, Hutchinson 67-41 at home.
The win moves the Conquistadors to 16-2 on the season and 11-1 in the KJCCC as the Conqs now gear up for the second time through the KJCCC schedule. The win ended a 54-game win streak by Hutchinson and marks the 18 straight victory at home.
It took two minutes to get the first points of the contest as
Konstantina Mantziori netted the first basket of the game giving the Conqs the 2-0 lead. Hutchinson countered with the next six points, but the game would be tight and a defensive battle as it was tied 11-11 late in the first quarter but Hutchinson would lead 13-11 after the first stanza. The Conqs evened game at 13-13 early in the second quarter and it would remain that way until under the six-minute mark when Hutchinson regained the lead. The lead stayed with Hutchinson until the Conqs got a three-pointer from
Shorna Preston to lead 23-21 with 33 seconds left in the first half and the Conqs took that lead into halftime.
A 7-0 spurt by the Conqs opened the second half making it 28-21 and then the lead jumped to nine at 36-27 behind a
Mia Jordan jump shot with five minutes left in the third quarter. The Conqs ended the third quarter outscoring Hutchinson 8-0 to lead 44-28 after outscoring the Blue Dragons 21-7 in the third. The Conqs put the finishing touches on the game with a 23-13 fourth quarter and secured the dominate win with a strong second half to win 67-41.
The Conqs shot 41% and hit 11 three-pointers in the victory, while the defense held Hutchinson to a season-low 22.6% shooting as they hit only 14 field goals and were 2-27 from three-point range. Conqs also forced 19 Blue Dragon turnovers, while recording a team-high this season 12 blocks.
Shorna Preston filled the stat sheet up finishing with 17 points on 7-16 shooting and grabbed 13 rebounds for her 11
thdouble-double of the season. Preston added eight steals, three blocks, and three assists.
Layla-J Cameron chipped in 15 points with four rebounds and four assists. Mantziori added nine points, three rebounds, and six assists, while
Tayah Morgan finished with eight points and six rebounds.
