It was a battle, but the Dodge City women's basketball team put together a strong performance to work past rival Garden City 65-58.
The win moves the Conquistadors to 17-2 on the season and 12-1 in KJCCC while stretching the Conqs' home win streak to 20-straight games. Conqs victory in the series against the Broncbusters is the eighth in the last 11 meetings.
It was a cold start to the night offensively for the Conqs as nearly four minutes went by without points, but Garden City managed only four points during that time to lead 4-0. A
Becca Unruh three-point started the scoring for the Conqs as she would be big on the night overall; the three from Unruh sparked a 9-0 Conqs run to give the Conqs control. That run turned into a 12-1 run leading to a 12-5 advantage and at the end of the first quarter the Conqs led 16-12. The Conqs held Garden City at bay throughout the second quarter and led 32-27 at halftime.
In the second half, Garden City stuck with their pressure and found some consistent offense tying the game at 36-36 just two minutes into the third quarter, and then took the lead going up by as many as three. Trailing late in the third
Shorna Preston split a pair of free throws and then would get a layup in the final 20 seconds of the quarter to send the game into the fourth tied at 45-45. The Conqs wasted no time to regain the lead early in the fourth behind a 7-0 run to start the quarter including another Unruh three-pointer and the Conqs would use that stretch to secure the 65-58 win.
Conqs finished the night shooting 44.7% hitting nine three-pointers but were only 14-24 from the free-throw line. Garden City countered by shooting 42% on the night which is the highest shooting percentage by an opponent this season against the Conqs. Just like the first meeting earlier in the season, the game was filled with turnovers from defensive pressure on both sides as Garden City had 23 turnovers and the Conqs had 21.
Unruh led the Conqs on the night with 18 points going 4-8 from three-point range and 6-10 from the field.
Tayah Morgan added 14 points, while
Konstantina Mantziori posted nine points on the night.
Layla-J Cameron capped the evening with eight points and six rebounds, while
Shorna Preston finished with six points and 12 rebounds.
Up next the Conqs travel to Concordia on Saturday, January 25th to take on Cloud County at 1:00 pm.
