For the first time this season, the Dodge City women's basketball team dropped a KJCCC contest as they suffered their first loss since early November falling 63-60 on the road against Coffeyville on a three-pointer in the final seconds.
The loss drops the Conquistadors to 15-2 overall and 10-1 in KJCCC action this season, also snapping the Conqs 13-game win streak.
After trading three-point baskets to open the game the Conqs would score the next five points and use that to lead the rest of the first quarter carrying a 14-10 advantage in the second stanza. The Conqs lead jumped to nine at 23-14 behind a 7-0 run but Coffeyville answered back. The Red Ravens drew within a single possession late in the first half and made it a one-point game at 26-25 with just seconds left but a
Sofia Ahmed three-pointer gave the Conqs a 29-25 advantage entering halftime. The Conqs continued to hold Coffeyville at arm's length throughout the third quarter until about the three-minute mark when a three-pointer by the Red Ravens tied the game at 38-38. In the final thirty seconds of the third, the game would tie up again with a free throw and then Coffeyville grabbed the 46-45 lead with another free throw and ultimately led 48-45 entering the fourth quarter. The lead remained with the home team until the Conqs got a jump shot from
Layla-J Cameron with under five minutes left to tie the game at 54-54 then behind some free throws the Conqs went up 57-54. Coffeyville flipped the lead back to their side but a free throw by
Shorna Preston with 16 seconds left tied the game at 60-60. A late turnover by the Conqs spoiled their chance for a game-winning shot and left the door open for Coffeyville who hit a three-pointer with .3 seconds left to grab the 63-60 decision.
Conqs had their worst shooting performance of the season, shooting under 40% for the first time this year, as they shot just 31.7% and were only 12-21 from the free-throw line, while Coffeyville only shot 35.3% but was 19-27 from the charity stripe.
Preston finished with 15 points, six rebounds, four steals, two assists, and two blocks on the night for the Conqs in the loss. Cameron tallied 15 points with four rebounds and three assists.
Tayah Morgan added 12 points with three rebounds and two assists.
The Conqs look to put the loss in the rearview mirror quickly as they turn their attention to #1 Hutchinson in a clash of top KJCCC and NJCAA teams on Saturday, January 18th, at 1:00 p.m.
