Football Overcomes 21-Point Deficit to Beat Iowa Central

Call'em the comeback kids, the Dodge City football team came back from a 21-point deficit to earn the team's third win of the season beating Iowa Central 25-24 at home with the game-winning score coming with 1:02 left in the contest.

The win for the Conquistadors moves them to 3-2 on the season while giving the Conqs a 5-4 edge over Iowa Central in the all-time series. The Conqs' three wins this season have come by a combined seven points.

It was a rough start to the day as Iowa Central busted a 76-yard pass play two plays into the game to find the endzone early and then got the ball back after a fumbled kickoff setting up a short field for the Tritons. Iowa Central would score again and lead 14-0 before the Conqs offense even had their hands on the ball. Conqs would have a big fourth down stop in the red zone defensively but after a bad snap on a punt would turn the ball over on downs on a short field once again and Iowa Central would find the endzone again to lead 21-0 in the first quarter.

Mounting a drive to end the first quarter the Conqs would work into the red zone early in the second stanza and a 24-yard field goal by Emanuel Aguilar making it 21-3. The Conqs would visit the endzone for the first time with just over six minutes remaining in the first half as Bryce Conover hit Kerya Powell for a 49-yard pass to move the ball down the field and a five-play drive finished with a one-yard touchdown run by Derick Shanks Jr. to make it 21-10. A 15-play drive covering 62 yards just before the end of the first half would produce three more points for the Conqs as Aguilar booted a 32-yard field goal to make it 21-13 entering halftime.

Early in the second half Iowa Central would find their only other points of the game that didn't come in the first quarter as they tallied a 26-yard field goal to push their lead back to 11 at 24-13. The Conqs would not be rattled as they put together a 10-play drive covering 68 yards finishing with a Ryan Scott three-yard touchdown run but a two-point try was unsuccessful making the game 24-19. Another long drive would lead the Conqs to their first lead of the day as Gavynn Parker on a fourth and seventh play would hit Ahimr Culmer for 27 yards to convert and then on a fourth and 16 play would hit Culmer again this time for 19 yards and the go-ahead touchdown as a pile of Conqs pushed Culmer into the endzone. After a missed two-point try the Conqs held a 25-24 lead with just over one minute remaining. Iowa Central would challenge in the final minutes to get into field goal range but the Conqs stymied the Tritons enough to hold them off for the 25-24 victory.

In the win, the Conqs threw for 350 yards and was efficient on offense going 7-16 on third down and 2-4 on fourth down. The defense held Iowa Central to 282 total yards and just 4-16 on third down and 1-4 on fourth down.

Conover was 8-15 on the day throwing for 204 yards before leaving the game with an injury, while Parker finished the contest going 8-22 for 146 yards and a touchdown. Shanks Jr. ran for 57 yards on 15 carries with a touchdown, while Antonio Jamison Jr. had a monster game with six receptions for 130 yards. Akim Lanieux caught three passes for 73 yards and Culmer added three catches for 60 yards and a touchdown.

On defense, Sam Brooks tallied seven tackles while Amoriea Jenkins added seven tackles. Noah Williams and Kaleb Gray each finished six tackles on the day, while Micah Wing had 1.5 sacks and four tackles.

The Conqs are back on the road next week as they will take on #1 Hutchinson for a noon kickoff on Saturday, October 5th.
