Dodge City women's soccer opened KJCCC play in impressive fashion taking on #17 Barton and the Conquistadors were on the brink of upsetting the Cougars but settled for a 2-2 tie to open KJCCC play.
The tie moves the Conqs to 0-1-1 on the season snapping a 12-match losing streak to Barton as the Conqs picked up some points in the KJCCC standings.
Despite some early possession garnered by Barton the Conqs would not allow them much of any good looks towards the goal and the matchup remained scoreless until the 38th minute when
Martina Bonilla blasted a free kick from 35 yards into the back of the net. The Conqs would carry that 1-0 lead into halftime.
In the second half, the Conqs would continue to maintain the advantage and both teams would misfire on wide-open looks at the goal until the 77th minute when Barton broke through to even the match up at 1-1. However, just three minutes later
Tara Knego would blast a ball ahead opening a run towards the goal for Bonilla and she would capitalize lifting the Conqs back to the lead at 2-1. That lead would hold up until the final minute of the match Barton would push one into the box and get a head on it to net their second goal and ultimately cap the game at a 2-2 draw.
The Conqs were nearly even in shots with the Cougars as Barton outshot the Conqs just 16-13 and 8-6 in shots on goal. Bonilla netted both goals for the Conqs in the tie, while
Ana Ramirez-Cortes posted six saves in the matchup.
Up next the Conqs take on #15 KCK in Wichita at Stryker Sports Complex on Friday, August 30th at 3:00 pm.
