Men's Basketball Let's One Slip Away In Overtime at Northwest Kansas Tech

The Dodge City men's basketball team hit the road for KJCCC action on Saturday and traveled to Goodland, Kansas to take on a feisty Northwest Kansas Tech team and the contest would prove to be a tight one going to overtime where the Conquistadors fell 89-88.

The loss moves the Conqs to 9-17 on the season and 7-13 in KJCCC with four regular season games remaining as the Conqs try to position themselves for the playoffs.

The Conqs snagged the early lead on the road and would work to a 12-4 advantage just five minutes into the contest as Jamari Gamble dropped in a three-pointer. The lead would remain with the Conqs throughout most of the first half never going higher than eight, but the Mavericks of Northwest Kansas Tech would manage to tie the game at 38-38 with just under two minutes remaining in the first half. Conqs would manage to grab the lead back but only carried a 42-41 advantage into halftime. The lead would flip hands to the Mavericks nearly five minutes into the second half as they made a layup to take a 50-49 lead. The second half would remain tight just like the first with the Conqs in front most of the way but Northwest Kansas Tech behind two free-throws in the final minute tied the game at 78-78. After a Conq turnover, the Mavericks had a shot to win the game in regulation but came up empty sending the game to overtime. In overtime, the Conqs held a four-point lead with 50 seconds remaining, but the Mavericks once again got a pair of free throws and then a layup with an and-one to tie and take the lead. The Conqs would have a couple of looks before time expired but fall just short 89-88 in overtime on the road.

In the loss, the Conqs shot 43.1% hitting 10 three-pointers and going 16-21 from the free throw line but Northwest Kansas Tech also shot 43.1% and was 29-34 from the charity stripe. The game also featured 52 combined turnovers.

Chevalier "Ice" Emery led the Conqs with 19 points on 6-18 shooting and had four steals, while Hunter Duncan tallied 17 points on 7-14 shooting with six rebounds, four assists, and six steals. Avnoor Bhullar chipped in 14 points and eight rebounds and Gamble added 12 points.

The Conqs return home for their next contest as they take on Seward County on Wednesday, February 21st at 7:30 pm; it will be sophomore night as the Conq sophomores will be recognized before the game.Â
