After victory in the season opener, the Dodge City women's basketball team hit the road for the first time this season and opened the Odessa Classic with a showdown against the host the #8 Odessa Wranglers.
The Conquistadors behind another hot shooting night picked up a big early season win beating a Top 10 team 88-55 to move to 2-0 on the season. The win marks the first over a Top 10 team since February 2020.
Conqs opened the night on an 8-0 run as
Layla-J Cameron drained a pair of three-pointers and
Shorna Preston had a bucket. The lead would grow to 11 in the first quarter as the Conqs led 18-7 after the first 10 minutes of action. Headed into halftime the Conqs held a 35-21 advantage and despite Odessa pushing back in the third quarter the Conqs would cruise to the victory stepping on the gas pedal in the fourth to drop 30 points in the quarter and grow their lead grabbing a convincing 88-55 win.
Offensively, the Conqs were clicking. They shot 51.5% from the field and made 13 three-pointers while dishing out 22 assists on 34 made field goals. The Conqs stymied Odessa all night long, holding the Wranglers to just 37% shooting and 2-16 from three-point range while outrebounding them 46-28 and forcing 26 turnovers.
Cameron led the Conqs with 25 points on 10-18 shooting including 4-9 three-pointers while adding three rebounds, two assists, and three steals.
Tayah Morgan chipped in 18 points with five assists and four rebounds. Preston made it back-to-back double-doubles to start the season as she had 14 points and 10 rebounds while adding four assists.
