Dodge City women's basketball battled with their second ranked opponent of the season in game two of the Odessa Classic in Texas taking on #7 New Mexico. The Conquistadors battled against the Thunderbirds for three quarters but a strong fourth by New Mexico doomed the Conqs in an 84-66 loss.
The Conqs jumped out front early working to a 10-2 advantage and then a 13-4 lead, but New Mexico pushed back and snagged a late lead in the first quarter. At the end of the first the Conqs would hold the lead but just 17-16. Both teams would knock down some shots in the second stanza but the Conqs would see New Mexico establish a 41-32 lead and with a 28-20 quarter the Thunderbirds carried the 44-37 lead into halftime. The Conqs mounted an early 6-0 run in the second half to draw within one at 44-43 but would not get any closer as New Mexico pushed the lead back out and led 61-52 entering the fourth quarter. The lead would move to double figures in the fourth and the Conqs were unable to stay with New Mexico as the game ended with a 23-14 fourth by the Thunderbirds as the Conqs fell 84-66.
Offensively the Conqs shot 40% in the loss but just 27.8% from three-point range (5-18), while holding New Mexico to just 38.7% shooting but the Thunderbirds were 25-27 from the free throw line. Conqs were also outrebounded in the contest 46-30.
Layla-J Cameron dropped 23 points on 7-12 shooting including 3-5 three-pointers and was 6-6 from the free throw line adding four rebounds, and three assists.
Shorna Preston added 12 points and five rebounds, while
Konstantina Mantziori finished with nine points.
The loss moved the Conqs to 2-1 on the season.
