Women's Basketball Cruises in Season Opener Against Western Texas

It was a hot start to the season for the Dodge City women's basketball team as they came out firing on all cylinders on the way to a season-opening 99-55 win over Western Texas. 
 
The win moves the Conquistadors to 1-0 to start the season and is the sixth straight season-opening win with Head Coach, Landon Steele 4-0 in season openers at Dodge City. 
 
After starting the contest 5-5 the Conqs went on a 13-0 run to take control early leading 18-6 and would not look back owning a 29-8 lead after the first quarter. The Conqs would continue to shoot the ball well in the second stanza out scoring Western Texas 27-17 in the frame and hitting 10 three-pointers in the first half. Leading 56-25 the Conqs would add to the lead in the third quarter out scoring Western Texas 24-11 and cruising to the 99-55 victory. 
 
The Conqs shot 51.3% from the field and hit 15 three-pointers in the win. They also dominated the glass outrebounding Western Texas 46-23. The Conqs had 24 assists on 41 made field goals, forced 28 turnovers, and recorded 18 steals. 
 
Five double-figure performances paced the Conqs in the win led by Becca Unruh who dropped 23 points on 8-10 shooting including 5-6 from three-point range in her Conq debut. Shorna Preston added a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds along with four steals, and two blocks. Layla-J Cameron jumped right back into things for the Conqs as she tallied 18 points, while Savi Mi filled the stat sheet with 15 points, four rebounds, four assists, and five steals. Konstantina Mantziori added 10 points, three assists, and four steals on the night for the Conqs. 
 
The Conqs have their first road trip of the season looming ahead as they travel to Odessa, Texas, to take on some top-caliber opponents at the Odessa Classic. First up, the Conqs take on host #8 Odessa on Thursday, November 7th, at 6:00 p.m. They will then play #7 New Mexico on Friday, November 4th, at 4:00 p.m. and wrap up the tournament against Frank Phillips on Saturday, November 9th, at 10:00 a.m.
