Dodge City women's basketball used a strong third quarter to propel themselves to a 77-53 win at home over Cloud County in KJCCC action.
The Conquistadors with the win move to 7-1 on the season and 2-0 in KJCCC action, pushing their win streak to five on the season. The Conqs have won seven in a row in the series against the Thunderbirds.
The game would start slowly for both teams in the first quarter as the contest would never seem to settle into a flow, but the Conqs would take the lead and late free throws in the quarter gave the Conqs a 17-11 lead after the first ten minutes. An 8-0 run to start the second quarter gave the Conqs a firmer grasp on the lead in the contest as a layup by
Sofia Ahmed made it 25-11 with just under six and a half minutes left in the first half. The lead would be as high as 13 and the Conqs led 35-25 going into halftime. The Conqs would open the second half outscoring the Thunderbirds just 12-8 over the first five minutes of the third quarter but then 10-1 in the final five minutes of the quarter for a 22-9 frame to lead 57-34 entering the fourth quarter. The Conqs would put the finishing touches on the matchup and secure the 77-53 win.
Defensively the Conqs stymied Cloud County all game holding the Thunderbirds to just 23.4% shooting and would out rebound them 47-32. Conqs would shoot 44.8% from the field and record 22 assists on 26 made field goals.
Fifteen points each for
Tayah Morgan and
Layla-J Cameron would pace the Conqs in the victory. Morgan added six rebounds and two assists, while Cameron had four assists and four rebounds. Shoran Preston recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 11 points and matched her career-high with 15 rebounds and stuffed the stat sheet with six assists, four steals, and two blocks.
Mia Jordan had a strong performance with 14 points, six rebounds, and two assists. Ahmed had a strong game off the bench scoring eight points in just 11 minutes of action.
Conference play continues for the Conqs on Tuesday, November 26th as they take on Cowley on the road at 5:30 pm.
