Jayhawk Conference play opened with a tough rivalry showdown for the Dodge City women's basketball team as they took on Garden City on the road and earned a 61-55 victory.
The win moves the Conquistadors to 6-1 on the season and 1-0 in KJCCC action. The Conqs have won five of the last six meetings in the series. Conqs are 3-1 in KJCCC openers under Head Coach,
Landon Steele.
The Conqs jumped up early leading to an 8-0 start behind a pair of three-pointers from
Layla-J Cameron and
Tayah Morgan and a layup by
Konstantina Mantziori. The lead grew to a 14-0 start before Garden City got on the board and was a 16-8 lead after the first quarter. The Conqs would go up 20-8 but Garden City countered with a 12-0 run to tie the game at 20-20 with just over four minutes left in the first half. Conqs carried a 30-27 lead into halftime and despite Garden City snatching a brief lead a couple of times in the second half the Conqs would fend them off and put the finishing touches on the road win claiming the 61-55 victory.
The Conqs shot 47.8% from the field and controlled the boards, outrebounding Garden City 32-17. The game featured 58 total turnovers between the two teams.
Shorna Preston continues to perform strongly as she recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 14 points and 12 rebounds while adding seven assists, two steals, and two blocks. Morgan contributed 14 points for the Conqs with three rebounds and three assists, while Cameron chipped in 12 points. Mantziori finished with nine points and five rebounds, while
Morane Dossou finished with eight points off the bench.
The Conqs returned home for the first time since the season opener to continue the season against Cloud County on Saturday, November 23rd at 1:00 pm.
