Men's Basketball Duel With North Platte But Fall Short

Dodge City men's basketball hit the road for the first time this season and took North Platte in a neutral site contest over in Garden City at the Broncbuster Classic. The Conqs would hang tight with North Platte throughout but could not get going falling 70-66. 

The Conquistadors after surrendering the first bucket would go on a 5-0 run to lead 5-2 early the lead would flip to North Platte as the first half continued. The Conqs remained close and would tie the game up at 35-35 behind a Keshawn Brown Jr. three-pointer in the final 30 seconds of the first half but a pair of free throws to end the half up the Conqs behind 37-35 at intermission. In the second half, the Conqs snagged the lead briefly to open the half at 38-37 just 1:30 into the half but the lead was short-lived. The Conqs continued to make advances to try and tie or take the lead getting to within one at 48-47 with 12:27 remaining behind a Mynor Strong three-pointer but North Platte countered with an 8-1 run to regain control. The lead was down to two or three over the final minutes several times but again the Conqs were unable to tie or take the lead ultimately falling 70-66. 

In the loss, the Conqs shot just 34.9% from the field while North Platte countered by shooting 40.3%. 

Jayse Boatwright paced the Conqs with 15 points as he was 8-10 from the free-throw line and grabbed five rebounds. Strong chipped in 13 points off the bench, while Kyle Burns added 12 points and four steals. 

The Conqs with the loss fell to 0-2 to open the 2024-25 season.
