Men's Basketball Picks Up Road Conference Win Over Seward County

Dodge City men's basketball made it back-to-back wins to open the 2024 calendar year by bringing home an 89-78 victory on the road against Seward County.

The win moves the Conquistadors to 7-8 on the season and 5-4 in KJCCC, while marking the sixth win over the Saints in the last seven meetings in the series.

Both teams started out slow struggling to find offense as the Conqs had some early turnover woes and Seward would lead 5-3 at the under 16-minute timeout. The Conqs would tie the contest at 9-9 and then go back and forth with the Saints for a long stretch. Conqs got an Avnoor Bhullar three-pointer and then would extend their lead for the first time in the game as Seward's head coach would not only get one technical foul but two in a short period of time and the Conqs would go 3-4 on those free throws and lead 29-22 with 7:11 in the first half. The lead would grow to as high as 10 in the first half for the Conqs but would be just seven at the half as the Conqs led 43-36. In the second half, the Conqs held Seward at arm's length and solidified the victory behind an 11-0 run in the latter portion of the game leading to the 89-78 victory.

Offensively the Conqs would finish shooting 50% from the floor in the contest and overcame 26 turnovers by forcing 23 from Seward and outrebounding the Saints 45-33.

Jamari Gamble paced the Conqs with a career-high 21 points on 7-12 shooting adding three rebounds and two assists. Gavin Shannon added 20 points on 8-13 shooting with five rebounds, two steals, and two assists, while both Avnoor Bhullar and Chevalier "Ice" Emery each chipped in 13 points. Bhullar added seven rebounds on the night. Hunter Duncan finished with 10 points, five rebounds, six assists, and three steals.

Up next the Conqs are back at home on Wednesday, January 10th as they will host Coffeyville at 7:30 pm.
