Dodge City women's basketball got the second half of the KJCCC season underway with a road trip to take on the top team in the KJCCC in #4 Hutchinson and it would be another duel to the wire like the first matchup. The Conquistadors would see Hutchinson snag the lead before halftime and hold on to it for the 82-77 win.
The loss for the Conqs moves them to 16-3 on the season and 10-3 in KJCCC action and snaps a five-game win streak for the Conqs.
Early the matchup was tight and back and forth tied up at 8-8 but the Conqs would score the next five points on a
Mia Jordan putback layup and
Layla-J Cameron three-pointer to lead 13-8. The Conqs would use that pair of back-to-back buckets to ultimately hold a 22-18 lead after the first quarter. The lead would remain with Conqs until the latter portion of the second quarter as Hutchinson swung the momentum their way and grabbed the lead going up by as many as six but the Conqs made it a one-point game at halftime trailing 46-45. In the second half, the Conqs constantly continued to make advances against Hutchinson, but the Blue Dragons had answers to maintain their lead making it a 66-62 game at the end of the third quarter. The Conqs would stretch the game out in the final minute to try and stay in the contest but ultimately ran out of time falling 82-77.
Both teams were nearly even shooting on the night as the Conqs shot 44.8% from the field and Hutchinson countered by shooting 45.9%. A big difference was the free throw line as Hutchinson was 19-27 and the Conqs had just 12 attempts going 8-12.
Paris Santacaterina tallied a career-best 26 points on 11-19 shooting including 4-6 from three-point range, while adding six rebounds and three assists.
Parris Atkins recorded a double-double with 15 points and a career-high 10 rebounds, while
Kyriana Jones tallied 13 points and six rebounds. Cameron added nine points and eight rebounds on the night.
