Women's Basketball Outduels Garden City in KJCCC Action

Dodge City women's basketball made it five wins in a row with a victory over rival Garden City 85-77 on Wednesday night.

The win moves the Conquistadors to 16-2 on the season and 10-2 in KJCCC action, while making it three straight wins in the series against Garden City.

The Conqs would take the initial lead and never relinquish it despite Garden City cutting into the lead several times throughout the contest. Both teams started off slow offensively, but it was the inside presence at the rim that got the Conqs some layups to hold a 15-11 lead after the first quarter. The second stanza would see the contest tied several times starting at 20-20 but the Conqs would put together a 15-5 run to finish the first half and carry a 41-29 advantage into halftime. The halftime lead by the Conqs would ultimately hold up despite Garden City getting within five midway through the fourth quarter. The Conqs would grab the 85-77 victory.

Conqs shot 57.1% in the contest and while hitting a season-low five three-pointers used the inside presence to get several easy looks at the basket as the Conqs tallied 25 assists on 32 made field goals. Defensively the Conqs held Garden City to just 34.2% shooting.

Six ladies tallied double figures for the Conqs led by Paris Santacaterina who tallied 17 points going 6-7 from the free throw line adding six assists and three rebounds. Shorna Preston posted a career-high 16 points on 8-10 shooting adding five rebounds, three assists, and two blocks, while Kyriana Jones chipped in 15 points and five rebounds. Mia Jordan finished with nearly a triple-double posting 10 points, 10 rebounds, and seven blocks. Parris Atkins added 13 points on 5-8 shooting with three assists, and Layla-J Cameron posted 10 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists.

The Conqs will rest up with the bye this Saturday and then be back in action against #5 Hutchinson on the road on Wednesday, January 24th at 5:30 pm.
