Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | Mike Smith

Volleyball Goes 3-1 at McCook Invitational

Dodge City volleyball continued to compete on the road as they traveled to their third tournament of the season this time in Nebraska at McCook and the Conquistadors returned home with a 3-1 weekend showing. 

The Conqs opened the McCook Invitational with a straight-set sweep of Northeast 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-21), the Conqs wrapped up day one of action with a tough three-set loss to McCook (25-21, 25-20, 25-20). On Saturday the Conqs settled in nicely and picked up a pair of 3-0 wins beating Frank Phillips (25-19, 25-23, 25-18) and Lamar (25-23, 25-17, 25-14). The 3-1 weekend moves the Conqs to 7-5 on the season. 

It would be three tight sets but the Conqs were able to open the McCook Invitational taking down Northeast 3-0 recording 13 or more kills in all three sets. Tess De Zanet paced the Conqs with 14 kills in the match adding seven digs, while Beatriz Lampugnani Cornachini added eight kills and 10 digs with two aces. Agnes Hegardt chipped in seven kills, while Leisey Keli'i tallied 15 digs and three aces. Sierra Scanlan tallied 38 assists, with four aces, six digs, and three block assists. 

In the loss to McCook the Conqs would keep things close but ultimately were unable to work past the host of the tournament falling in three sets. Cornachini had nine kills for the, while Caitlyn Sonday added seven kills. Madison Wallman had one of her best performances of the season with 12 digs, while Scanlan finished with 27 assists, eight digs, and three kills. 

After splitting the games on day one of the McCook Invitational the Conqs open Saturday with a three-set win over Frank Phillips. Defensively the Conqs had 59 digs with Keli'i recording 18 and Jatnna Pena adding 14 for herself and had a pair of aces. Cornachini had another double-double this season with 13 kills and 10 digs, while Scanlan finished with 29 assists, 11 digs, and three kills. 

Conqs capped the McCook Invitational with a three-set sweep of Lamar controlling the final two sets to grab the win. Hegardt has strong for the Conqs with 15 kills while adding two aces and two block assists. Cornachini chipped in 10 kills with eight digs, while Keli'i finished with 12 digs and Scanlan posted 39 assists, nine digs, two aces, and two kills. 

Cornachini earned McCook Invitational all-tournament team honors after her performance throughout the tournament. 

Up next the Conqs return to conference play as they host Barton on Wednesday, September 6th at 6:30 pm which will be their first home game of the season.
