For the first time since 2015, the Dodge City football team is 1-0 in KJCCC action winning their first conference game of the season by taking down Coffeyville 26-17 on Saturday night.
The win moves the Conquistadors to 1-1 on the season and marks the first win over the Red Ravens of Coffeyville since 2015 (the 2018 season win over Coffeyville was forfeited). The win also marks Head Coach,
Terry Karg's 60th career victory coaching.
Both teams coming off a week one loss were looking for a strong start but both teams struggled to start the evening. However, Coffeyville would get on the board first with a field goal with 5:14 left in the first quarter. Starting their second drive of the game at the 50-yard line Coffeyville worked the ball into the redzone threatening to score but the Conqs held the Red Ravens to a 31-yard field goal.
Early offensive woes for the Conqs stretched all the way until under six minutes left in the first half when the Conqs got a short field starting at the Coffeyville 41-yard line and
Treyvon Jefferson then connected with Kam'Ryan Thomas for a 41-yard touchdown pass. The Conqs would lead 6-3 after a missed extra point.
Coming out of halftime leading just 6-3 the Conqs didn't waste time to get on the board again as they mounted a quick five-play 82-yard scoring drive that saw Jefferson find
Kerya Powell for three receptions including a 40-yard catch and then
Keith Liggins capped the drive with a 29-yard touchdown catch, making it 13-3. With 6:05 left in the third quarter Coffeyville would find the endzone for the first time in the contest making it a three-point game once again, but the Conqs had an answer the next drive. Jefferson found Powell for a 59-yard touchdown and with the extra point the Conqs led 20-10 with 3:29 left in the third quarter.
Coffeyville would take advantage of a Conqs miscue early in the fourth quarter as they intercepted a pass for a pick-six to once again make the contest a three-point affair at 20-17. The final points of the contest came on a three-play scoring drive on another short field for the Conqs as
Stone Wilson would account for all 43-yard on three runs including a 19-yard touchdown run to make it 26-17 Conqs. Looking to solidify the game the Conqs would get the ball back with 2:16 left but a fumble gave Coffeyville new life but the Conqs would force them into a fourth and 12 and come up with a stop with just 30 seconds remaining to secure the 26-17.
Conqs would outgain Coffeyville 416 to 215 total yards with 293 yards coming through the air as Jefferson was 20-30 for 293 yards with three touchdowns. Powell snagged six passes for 147 yards with a touchdown, while Thomas caught six passes for 72 yards and a touchdown. On the ground, Wilson amassed 117 yards on 15 carries with a touchdown. Defensively
Moses Sarweh recorded nine tackles with a sack, while
Alexandre Dedieu notched seven tackles with a sack. Both
Kenyan Hunter and
Bobby Arnold III each snagged an interception.
Up next the Conqs are back on the road for more KJCCC action next Saturday, September 9th when they travel to Highland to take on the Scotties at 1:00 pm.
