Dodge City baseball welcomed Otero to town for a non-conference twin-bill on Wednesday and would split the doubleheader falling 6-5 in game one and responding with a 5-3 game two win.
The split of the doubleheader moved the Conquistadors to 20-20 on the season and up next the Conqs will get back to KJCCC play as they will open a series with Pratt on the road on Thursday, April 13th and then host the Beavers on Saturday, April 15th.
Game 1 – Lost 6-5 vs Otero
The Conqs would open the scoring in game one getting back-to-back walks and then
Carter Olson would bring in the first run of the game on an RBI double. In the bottom of the third, the Conqs doubled their output on the scoreboard as
Brian Hallum got on base with a double, and then Olson followed with a double to bring in Hallum making it 2-0 Conqs. The double party continued for the Conqs in the bottom of the fourth as
Alex Galyean produced an RBI double in the fourth to make it 3-0 Conqs through four innings. Otero broke through in the top of the fifth inning scoring four runs and then added two more in the sixth to give the Rattlers of Otero a 6-3 lead. The bottom of the sixth was led off by
Chayston Keck who doubled to open the inning and then scored on a single by
Nick Mesquita and an RBI double by Hallum would give the Conqs another run making it a one-run contest. In the seventh, the Conqs would get the tying run on base but would be unable to score falling 6-5 to Otero.
Three hit games from Olson and Keck paced the Conqs in the loss as Olson was 3-4 with two RBI and two doubles, while Keck was 3-3 with two runs scored, a double, and two stolen bases. Hallum added a 2-3 game with a run scored, RBI, and two doubles.
Michael Lopez tossed four solid innings as the starter and recorded seven strikeouts.
Game 2 – Won 5-3 vs Otero
The second game of the day was a flip of the script of the first as it was early offense for Otero and late offense for the Conqs that lifted them to the win and the split of the doubleheader. Otero got on the board first plating a run in the top of the first and then tallied a run in the second and third innings to lead 3-0 after three innings. In the bottom of the fifth, the Conqs would take advantage of the free passes and an Otero error to score five runs. A
Rhett Pospichal two-RBI single and RBI single from Olson highlighted the five-run fifth for the Conqs which led to the victory.
Chase Haley led the Conqs offense going 2-3 with a run scored, while Pospichal was 1-3 with two RBI and a run scored.
Carson Wright drew two walks, scored a run, and had three stolen bases.
Justus Revill tossed three solid innings as the starter, while
Brian Hallum followed with three scoreless innings recording five strikeouts.
