Baseball Squeezes Past Pratt in Pair Road Victories

Back to KJCCC play for the Dodge City baseball team as they opened a series with Pratt on Thursday on the road and would snag a pair of wins in tight ballgames winning 4-3 in nine innings and 5-3.

The wins move the Conquistadors to 22-20 on the season and 12-6 in KJCCC action, while also giving the Conqs six wins in the last seven meetings with the Beavers of Pratt.

The series moves to Dodge City on Saturday, April 15th for a doubleheader starting at 1:00 pm.

Game 1 – Won 4-3 vs Pratt (9 innings)
The Conqs started the day strong working the bases loaded in the top of the first behind a double by Zandt Payne, a walk, and hit batter, and then Cooper Schneider brought in a pair of runs off a single to give the Conqs the initial lead. In the top of the third after a pair of walks the Conqs capitalized on an error by Pratt to make it 3-0, but in the bottom of the fourth Pratt broke through with a pair of runs and then ultimately tied the contest up in the bottom of the seventh leaving the potential winning run at third in the seventh. The contest went to extra innings wherein the top of the ninth Cooper Tomkinson recorded a pinch-hit RBI double to score Nick Mesquita who led off the inning with a single, the Conqs would then sit-down Pratt relatively quietly in the bottom of the ninth to grab the 4-3 win.

Tristan Wolf tossed a spectacular 6.1 innings as the starter giving up three runs (one earned) on eight hits and two walks while striking out seven. Brian Hallum tossed the final 2.2 innings and picked up the win without giving up a run during his time on the mound.

At the plate Schneider was 2-5 with two RBI, Mesquita was 2-5 with a run scored, while Donnie Rhyne drew three walks.

Game 2 – Won 5-3 vs Pratt
The early lead fell in the Conqs pocket with a pair of runs in the top of the second in game two as a hit batter and then a single by Andrew Detlefsen worked two runners on with no outs and the Conqs would go on to score two runs. Pratt countered with a run in the bottom of the second and then tied the game up with another run in the third. It remained 2-2 until the fifth when the Conqs would tally three runs highlighted by an RBI double from Detlefsen and a two-RBI single by Alex Galyean. Pratt would manage to get one more run coming in the sixth but the seventh would mostly be uneventful offensively as the Conqs shut the door to secure the 5-3 win.

It was a 2-3 performance with a walk for Mesquita and Detlefsen was 2-3 with two runs scored, an RBI, a double, and a walk. Galyean added a 1-2 game with three RBI, while Schneider was 1-3 with a walk and run scored.
