Dodge City baseball stepped outside the KJCCC for some early week non-conference action and traveled to Alva, Oklahoma where they took on Northwestern Oklahoma State JV and split a doubleheader falling 8-4 in game one and answering with a game two 7-1 win.
The split moves the Conquistadors to 19-19 on the season overall as they are now set to continue the week with more non-conference action when they host Otero on Wednesday, April 5th for a doubleheader starting at 1:00 pm.
Game 1 – Lost 8-4 at NWOSU JV
The day started off with a bang for the Conqs as they struck early on the road in the top of the first inning as
Donnie Rhyne continued to be hot at the plate belting a two-run home run. NWOSU JV would counter with a run in the bottom of the first and then two in the second to snag the 3-2 advantage. In the top of the third, the Conqs would tie the game up at 3-3 as
Andrew Detlefsen his ninth home run of the season. In the bottom of the third NWOSU JV would get on the board again with a run and then scored two more in the fourth and sixth innings each. Down to the final three outs of the contest, the Conqs looked to mount a comeback and
Chase Haley would smack the Conqs third home run of the game giving the Conqs their fourth run but that would be all the scoring the Conqs would do in the seventh leading to an 8-4 loss.
Conqs had just six hits in the loss as Rhyne was 1-3 with a run scored, two RBI, and a home run, while Haley and Detlefsen were each 1-3 with a home run, RBI, and run scored.
Carter Olson,
Alex Galyean, and
Carson Wright each added a hit.
Jayden Minter tossed 1.1 innings as the starter and
Josh Nolte tossed 4.2 innings of relief on the mound for the Conqs.
Game 2 – Won 7-1 at NWOSU JV
The second game of the day just like the first saw early offense for the Conqs but this time it would help propel them to the win as the Conqs plated three runs in the top of the first inning.
Cooper Tomkinson got the scoring started with an RBI single and then
Ethan Hewell added a two-RBI single in the first to make it 3-0 Conqs. NWOSU JV got on the board with a run in the third but the Conqs would get that run back in the top of the fifth as Galyean led the inning off with a double and then scored on an RBI double by
Cooper Schneider. Conqs tacked on three more runs in the sixth for good measure as
Chayston Keck recorded his first career hit getting an RBI with it and then a pair of wild pitches scored two more for the Conqs leading to the 7-1 win.
Tomkinson was 2-4 with a run scored and RBI, while Galyean finished 1-3 with two runs scored, a walk, and a double. Schneider finished 1-4 with a run scored, RBI, and a double, while
Caden Matlon added a 1-2 game with a double.
On the mound,
Carson Frakes tossed four strong innings for the win giving up just one run on four hits and no walks, while striking out two.
Zade Cisneros,
Zack Robinson, and
Ashton Jenkins each tossed a scoreless inning of work to finish out the game.
