Dodge City baseball for the first time this season and the second time under Head Coach,
Brett Doe have swept a KJCCC series after topping Pratt 5-4 and 9-4 at Cavalier Field in Dodge City on Saturday.
The Conquistadors improve to 24-20 on the season with the pair of wins and move to 14-6 in KJCCC action. The Conqs have won five straight games and won five straight in the series against Pratt and eight of the last nine against the Beavers.
Up next the Conqs will square off with Seward County as the Saints will come to town on Thursday, April 20th for a doubleheader and then will travel to Liberal on Saturday, April 21st for a twin bill.
Game 1 – Won 5-4 vs Pratt
After a scoreless first inning to open the day, Pratt took the early advantage plating three runs in the top of the second inning, and in the bottom of the frame, the Conqs answered. In the bottom of the second, the Conqs answered with a pair of runs as
Caden Matlon brought in two runs on a double. The Beavers would tally another run in the top of the third and would carry a 4-2 lead all the way into the seventh inning as both teams would be able to score until that point. Down to the final three outs, the Conqs would send eight to the plate in the seventh and score three runs to snare the 5-4 win over Pratt. Matlon led the inning off with a single and
Cooper Schneider later had an infield single, and then
Cooper Tomkinson brought in the first run of the seventh on a sacrifice fly. The Conqs would then work the bases loaded and then
Andrew Detlefsen drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game and then
Carter Olson would work his way on base off a throwing error to score the game-winning run and the Conqs won 5-4 in walk-off fashion.
Walker earned the win on the mound pushing through seven innings giving up four runs on six hits, two walks, and two hit batters with three strikeouts.
Matlon led the Conqs offense going 2-3 with two RBI, a run scored, and a double, while Olson was 1-3 with a walk and run scored.
Donnie Rhyne added a 1-3 game with a run scored and walk, while
Zandt Payne, Tomkinson, and Schneider each had a hit.
Game 2 – Won 9-4 vs Pratt
The series finale would see the visiting team score first continuing that trend that happened in each game of the series as the Beavers plated a run in the top of the first inning. The Conqs didn't take long to counter scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning as Payne led the inning off with a single then Schneider followed with a walk and Detlefson then had an RBI single. Matlon added an RBI triple to score the third run of the first inning for the Conqs as the other run scored on a wild pitch. The lead grew for the Conqs in the third when Matlon belted a solo home run but Pratt had an answer sending seven to the plate in the fifth and would work the bases loaded on two walks and a hit batter ultimately scoring three runs in the inning to tie the game at 4-4. The Conqs would do the rest of the scoring posting two in the sixth on RBI singles by Tomkinson and Schneider, along with another on a solo home run by Olson in the seventh. In the bottom of the eight the Conqs got two more on a two-RBI double by Detlefsen and strong pitching over the final four innings from
Zade Cisneros helped the Conqs earn the 9-4 series finale win.
Cisneros earned the win in relief tossing four scoreless innings surrendering just two hits and a hit batter while striking out eight.
Michael DeBattista who started the game went a strong five innings giving up four runs on three hits, five walks, and a hit batter with four strikeouts.
Matlon again led the Conqs offense going 3-4 with a home run, triple, two RBI, and two runs scored, while Tomkinson was 2-3 with a walk and RBI. Detlefsen added a 2-5 game with a double, three RBI, and a run scored, while Schneider was 2-3 with two runs scored, an RBI, and two walks.
