Women's Basketball Claims First KJCCC Title Since 1987-88 With Win Over Independence

Dodge City women's basketball continued to etch their name in the history books of Conquistador athletics as they sunk the Pirate ship of Independence on Saturday earning a 64-55 win which captured them a share of the KJCCC championship title.

The win moved the Conqs to 25-2 on the season and 20-1 in KJCCC action while stretching their win streak to 18-straight games on the season and 18-straight wins at home. The Conqs with one more win will capture the KJCCC out-right.

The first quarter would see a slow start to the game for both teams and the contest would be back-and-forth with Independence finish the first 10 minutes on a 7-2 run to give the Pirates an 18-13 lead. The Conqs would put together an 11-0 run in the second quarter and outscore the Pirates 15-8 to carry the 28-26 lead into halftime. Contest would remain tight until the Conqs were able to put forth a 6-0 run to push the lead to 41-33 and with 2:27 left in the third quarter the lead moved to double figures for the first time in the game at 45-35. Conqs would go into the fourth quarter with a 49-40 lead and make that stand capturing the 64-55 win.

While the Conqs shot just 36.6% from the field the Conqs defense stymied the Pirates all night holding them to just 31.7% from the floor, while recording 13 steals, and making a season-high with eight blocks, while forcing 21 turnovers.

Bree Stephens registered a double-double with 15 points on 7-13 shooting and grabbed 11 rebounds, adding three blocks and three assists. Paris Santacaterina registered a career-high 16 points on 6-11 shooting, while five other Conqs finished with five to eight points each.

The Conqs will look to capture the KJCCC title out-right on Wednesday, February 22nd at 5:30 pm against Colby on the road.
