Dodge City softball wrapped up their second road trip to Texas with a doubleheader split against Western Texas dropping game one 11-2 in five innings but responding with a 9-5 win in game two.
The split moves the Conquistadors to 3-5 on the season as they went 3-1 on the road trip.
Up next the Conqs are scheduled to open KJCCC play as they are set to travel to Goodland for a doubleheader with Northwest Kansas Tech on Saturday, February 25
th and then will have their first games at home against Lamar on Monday, February 27
th in a doubleheader.
Game 1 – Lost 11-2 at Western Texas (5 innings)
The Conqs jump early in game one as
Melanie Castro led the contest with a walk and then stole second base to get into scoring position.
Mia Golka would bring her in with a hit and the Conqs led 1-0 but Western Texas answered with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. With Western Texas leading 3-1 in the top of the fourth the Conqs got on the board again taking advantage of a leadoff walk by
Madison Kacer and she would come around to score. In the bottom of the fifth things broke open Western Texas as they would go on a scoring frenzy with eight runs to take the game 11-2 in five innings.
In the loss Golka was 1-3 with an RBI, while
Alicyn O'Neill recorded an RBI and
Jazlynn Vaquera recorded a pair of walks. Castro had a run scored, walk, and stolen base.
Dalaney Utajara tossed 4.1 innings in the loss.
Game 2 – Won 9-5 at Western Texas
The Conqs struck early again in game two against Western Texas with a run in the top of the first as Castro led the game off with a single and came around to score on a sac-fly by
Addison Spencer. However, the Conqs would have to come from behind in the game as Western Texas tallied four runs in the bottom of the first to take control of the contest. Conqs chipped away at the lead with an RBI single by Kacer in the third and RBI single by Castro in the fourth to make it 4-3 Western Texas. Western Texas pushed lead to two with a run in the fourth, but the Conqs would answer again and in a big way. Working the bases loaded to open the top of the fifth the Conqs would get on the board again ultimately scoring five runs in the inning. Castro and
Rylie Hufford each and RBI singles in the inning to highlight the frame. Conqs would add another run in the top of the sixth for good measure and go on to secure the 9-5 win.
Conqs had 12 hits in the win led by Castro who was 3-5 with two runs scored, two RBI, and two stolen bases. Hufford finished 2-4 with an RBI, while Spencer added a 2-3 showing with a run scored, RBI, and walk. The Conqs had seven free passes with five walks and two hit batters.
K'Lee Flores tossed all seven innings for the win recording six strikeouts.
