Dodge City men's basketball got back in the win column on sophomore day against Independence sinking the Pirates ship early in route to an 80-65 victory.
The win moves the Conquistadors to 20-7 on the season and 16-5 in KJCCC. The win kept the Conqs in first place in the conference while a Coffeyville lost at Cloud County on Saturday put the Conqs in first place alone.
The Conqs jumped early on the Pirates going up 4-0 and after the first five minutes of the contest the Conqs had a double figure lead going up 15-5 behind an 11-1 run. The lead would balloon to 23-9 after a
Jason Edwards three-pointer and the Conqs didn't look back maintain a double-digit lead throughout the rest of the first half carrying a 44-27 lead into halftime. While the second half would see a few surges by the Pirates the Conqs were able to finish of Independence to capture the 80-65 win.
Conqs shot 45.3% in the contest and were very efficient offensively with 18 assists on 29 made field goals and tied a season-high with 12 three-pointers. Defensively the Conqs held Independence to 33.8% shooting with 19 turnovers and the Conqs matched a season-high with nine blocks.
Edwards tallied 21 points on 8-14 shooting including 5-8 from three-point range, while
Cam Malray notched a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds, adding four blocks also.
Shawn Warrior filled the stat sheet with 10 points, nine rebounds, and six assists.
Jacobi Sebock added 11 points and nine rebounds, along with four steals, while
DJ Jones chipped in 13 points with four assists and three steals.
The Conqs are back in action on Wednesday, February 22
nd at 7:30 pm against Colby on the road.
