Dodge City softball picked up their first wins of the season with a doubleheader sweep of Howard on the road in Texas picking up a 12-7 and 8-5 victory.
The wins move the Conquistadors to 2-4 on the season and came with a strong offensive showing as the Conqs scored 20 runs on 23 hits.
The Conqs continue their road in Texas on Saturday, February 18
th against Western Texas in Snyder, Texas for a doubleheader at 12:00 and 2:00 pm.
Game 1 – Won 12-7 vs Howard
The Conqs would fall behind early in the first game of the doubleheader as Howard tallied a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Conqs answered in the top of the second as
Mia Golka and
Raemie Lopp each reached on an error to open the inning and then RBI singles by
Rylie Hufford and
Madison Kacer got the Conqs on the board. After putting up four runs in the second the Conqs led 4-2 and added to that with a K'lee Flores solo home run in the top of the third. In the fourth Kacer blasted a solo home run and the Conqs pushed two more runs across then added two more in the fifth on an
Alicyn O'Neill two-run homer. Howard would get two in the third and two in the fifth, but the Conqs tallied one in the sixth and held Howard to just one more run in the seventh grabbing the 12-7 win.
O'Neill finished 2-5 with two runs scored, three RBI, and a home run, while Kacer was 2-4 with three RBI, two runs scored, and a home run. Flores added a 2-5 performance with a home run, two RBI, and run scored along with tossing all seven innings to earn the win in the circle.
Game 2 – Won 8-5 vs Howard
The offense continued for the Conqs early in game two of the doubleheader as they worked the bases loaded on a pair of singles and a walk in the first inning. Kacer then laced a two RBI single into left field to get the Conqs on the board. In the second the Conqs got an RBI single by
Melanie Castro to make it 3-0. Howard answered with a run in the bottom of the second only to see the Conqs answer with a Flores solo home run in the top of the third. In the bottom of the third Howard pushed back to tally three runs and tie the game up at 4-4. The lead quickly jumped back to the Conqs in the top of the fourth when
Camryn Lenz belted a solo home run to open the inning and the Conqs added two more in the fifth. After a run by Howard in the bottom of the fifth an RBI single by Castro pushed the Conqs lead to 8-5 in the top of the seventh and the Conqs retired the side in the bottom of the seventh to take game two 8-5.
Conqs offense produced 14 hits in the win with Castro and Lenz leading the charge. Castro finished 5-5 with a run scored and three RBI, while Lenz added a 4-4 showing with a home run, two runs scored, and an RBI. O'Neill added a 2-5 performance with a run scored. In the circle
Dalaney Utajara tossed 5.1 innings to earn the win, while Flores earned the save tossing the final 1.2 innings.
