Women's Basketball Wins 17th Straight Beating Cloud County

Dodge City women's basketball team hit the road in KJCCC action and kept their win streak going extending it to 17-straight games behind a 74-59 win over Cloud County. 
 
The Conquistadors with the win move to 24-2 on the season and 19-1 in conference play, while also marking their fourth straight win over the Thunderbirds in the series. The win is the first in Concordia since 2005 for the Conqs. 
 
It was a slow start offensively for both teams as the contest was tight throughout the first 10 minutes of action. The Conqs would see Cloud County tie the game up multiple times in the first quarter but a pair of Bree Stephens layups late in the quarter gave the Conqs a 15-11 lead after the first 10 minutes. The Conqs would see Cloud County pushing ahead going up by five points, but an Aujanae Latimer layup and Leah Mafua three-pointer tied the game at 23-23. The Conqs would go on a 9-0 run and overall, a 14-4 run over the final six minutes of the first half to carry a 32-27 advantage into halftime. Second half it would continue to be tight early as Cloud County even worked to a 35-34 lead, but the Conqs answered to carry a 52-42 lead into the fourth quarter. The Conqs would then see Cloud County string together a 10-0 run in the fourth quarter to close the gap to three points as the Conqs had a 13-point lead after first bucket of the fourth. The Conqs would finish the game strong and claim victory by the widest margin of the game winning 74-59. 
 
Defensively the Conqs held the Thunderbirds to just 27.4% shooting including only 4-19 from three-point range, while forcing 23 turnovers. Conqs started off slow offensively but picked up the pace finishing 45.8% from the field and 10-23 from three-point range. 
 
Jada Burton paced the Conqs with 17 points on 6-13 shooting adding three rebounds, two steals, and four assists. While Bree Stephens added 16 points on 7-10 shooting making seven or her final eight shots she attempted and added five rebounds, one assist, and two blocks. Jenna Rose Mafua chipped in 12 points all in the fourth quarter on four three-pointers and Leah Mafua filled the stat sheet nicely with eight points, nine rebounds, six assists, and two blocks. 
 
The Conqs are back home on Saturday, February 18th to continue their season when they host Independence at 1:00 pm. It will be sophomore day as the ladies will recognize nine sophomores; the women's sophomore recognition will take place during halftime of the men's game.
