Dodge City men's basketball ran into a tough challenge on the road in KJCCC action and a cold shooting night doomed the Conquistadors on the road as they fell 76-66 to Cloud County.
The Conqs with the loss fell to 19-7 on the season and 15-5 in KJCCC as their five-game win streak was snapped.
Conqs would lead only at 2-0 and briefly at 9-8 early in the game against the Thunderbirds of Cloud County as Cloud would swing the advantage to a 19-11 lead at the 8:47 mark of the first half and not look back. The Conqs would trail by as many as eight points in the first half and shot 27.8% in the half going 0-8 from three-point range to trail 33-28 at halftime. Over the first five minutes of the second half, the lead grew for Cloud County as they mounted a 16-4 run to work to their largest lead of the game going up 17 points. The Conqs would answer with a 7-0 run to trim the lead to 10 with 11:23 remaining and then get within nine multiple times in the final minutes but Cloud County would secure the 76-66 win.
In the loss, the Conqs shot under 40% for only the fourth time this season shooting just 28.9% from the floor and 3-20 from three-point range, while also struggling from the free throw line. Cloud County countered by shooting 45.1% in the contest including hitting nine three-pointers.
Jason Edwards finished with 15 points and six steals, while
Shawn Warrior was strong off the bench with 14 points going 8-12 from the free throw line and adding eight rebounds, two steals, and three assists.
Jacobi Sebock tallied a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds, while
DJ Jones chipped in 10 points going 6-7 from the free throw line, and added five rebounds and seven steals.
The Conqs are back home on Saturday, February 18th to continue their season when they host Independence at 3:00 pm. It will be sophomore day and the guys will recognize five players; the recognition will take place before starting lineups of the game.
