Dodge City women's basketball fended off a feisty Cloud County Thunderbird team for their fourth straight win and tenth win of the season picking up a 75-66 victory at home.
The victory moves the Conquistadors to 10-1 on the season and 4-1 in KJCCC play while also making it five-in-a-row in the series with the Thunderbirds.
Back-and-forth is how the game would be throughout the course of the first quarter with both teams holding slim leads and a Tayah Morgan three-pointer in the final seconds of the quarter tied the game at 17-17 after the first 10 minutes of action. The second quarter would be much of the same back-and-forth pace, but the Conqs snatched the lead early in the frame and used that to propel themselves to the lead at halftime 35-31. Both teams would pick up their shooting in the second half and the Conqs started that trend with an 8-0 run to open the second half ultimately outscoring Cloud County 23-11 in the third quarter. That lead would dissipate in the fourth as Cloud County answered with a 24-17 frame to finish the game but the Conqs would fend off the Thunderbird advances to secure the 75-66 win.
The Conqs shot just 30.3% from the field but would go 20-26 from the free throw line while forcing 23 Cloud County turnovers and winning the rebounding margin by three.
Parris Atkins led the Conqs with 17 points on 6-15 shooting and 4-5 free throws adding six rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Morgan chipped in 14 points with five rebounds and three assists, while Layla-J Cameron added 14 points on 5-8 shooting including 3-3 on three-pointers and adding six rebounds. Kyriana Jones finished with a solid nine points and nine rebounds.
The Conqs are back in action at home on Wednesday, December 6th against Cowley at 5:30 pm and then will wrap up play before the holiday break at Butler on Saturday, December 9th.
