For only the seventh time in school history, the Dodge City football team will compete in a postseason bowl game as the Conquistadors have accepted an invitation to play in the Xcel Energy Wool Bowl in Roswell, New Mexico.
The Conqs who are ranked #7 in the final NJCAA Division I rankings will suit up one more time this season on Friday, December 1st at 7:00 pm (6:00 pm MST) in the Wool Bowl and face #15 New Mexico Military Institute, making their first bowl game appearance since 2015. The meeting between the Conqs and Broncos will be the eighth all-time meeting and the first since 1980.
The Conqs are 7-3 on the season and ranked #7 in the NJCAA enjoying a great season under Head Coach, Terry Karg in just his second season leading the program. The Conqs finished second in the KJCCC after being picked to finish sixth in the conference in the preseason poll while having accomplished several other things this season including the most wins since 2016, most KJCCC wins (5) since 2015, the first win over a Top 10 ranked team since 2015 while snapping long losing streaks to Coffeyville, Butler, and Garden City.
The matchup sees the Conqs coming in averaging 23.6 points per game while boosting a top 10 scoring defense giving up just 19.5 points per game, while NMMI is averaging 32.4 points per game but surrendering 26.1 points per game. The Broncos of NMMI are 6-5 on the season with four of their five losses to Top 10 ranked teams; both teams have one comparable opponent this season in Snow as both teams suffered losses to Snow with Conqs falling 15-6 and NMMI falling 27-13 to Snow.
The Wool Bowl returned as a bowl game last year and featured NMMI last year with the Broncos beating Lackawanna 28-26. The game was previously played from 1966-79 before being restarted last season and is played in Roswell, New Mexico.
The 2023 Conqs will look to etch their name in the history books of Dodge City athletics and become the first-ever team to win a bowl game in school history.
