Dodge City men's basketball wrapped up their second road trip of the season taking on Trinidad State as part of the Trinidad Classic and the Conquistadors suffered a tough 103-88 loss to a NJCAA National Tournament from last year.
The loss drops the Conqs to 1-4 on the season with one more non-conference game left before focusing on KJCCC action.
It started slowly as it took nearly two minutes before the first points of the game and the Conqs would then drop behind 7-3 before scoring the next five points to grab the lead at 8-7. The first half would remain close with both teams owning leads, but the Conqs would fall behind 39-27 with 3:26 left in the half. Conqs would turn things around outscoring Trinidad State 13-5 over the final three and half minutes to draw within four points at halftime trailing 44-40. The second half saw the lead grow back to double figures for Trinidad State early and the Conqs were unable to answer back as they were outscored by 11 in the second half falling 103-88 on the road.
In the loss, the Conqs shot the ball well shooting 45.7% from the field and hit 10 three-pointers but was just 14-30 from the free-throw line. Trinidad State was blistering hot in the contest shooting 55.4% and going 23-31 from the free throw line. Conqs were able to limit their turnovers in the contest also with only 15.
Chevalier "Ice" Emery dropped 30 points on 12-19 shooting including five three-pointers adding two rebounds and three assists. Gavin Shannon added 21 points on 7-14 shooting and 6-10 free throws along with seven rebounds. Marius Canery chipped in 12 points.
The Conqs are back in action to wrap up non-conference play on Tuesday, November 14th at 7:00 pm against McCook in Nebraska.
