Volleyball Snaps Losing Streak With Tough Five Set Win at Butler

Dodge City volleyball snapped a five-match losing streak by picking up a road victory over Butler in a five-set battle.

The Conquistadors claimed the 3-2 (25-22, 20-25, 23-25, 25-19, 15-10) win moving to 13-13 on the season and 4-7 in KJCCC play. It marks the second win over Butler in the last three meetings both coming in five sets.

Conqs opened the night working to an early 4-1 advantage in the first set, but Butler countered with a 9-0 run to lead 10-4. The Conqs would have a response with a 5-0 run to draw within one, but Butler then mounted a 3-0 run to extend their lead back out. That lead for Butler would not hold up as the Conqs snatched it back and would take the first set 25-22. Set two saw the Conqs have an early lead, but Butler grabbed the advantage and held on to the lead as the Grizzlies won the second set 25-20. The third set was tight wire-to-wire as both teams held slim leads, but it was a late Butler run that gave the Grizzlies the third set 25-23. Needing a win in the fourth set to stay alive in the contest the Conqs answered the call jumping up 4-0 and using another 4-0 run to lead 14-10 forcing a Butler timeout. The Conqs would ultimately have an 8-1 run to lead 18-11 and use that to earn the fourth set 25-19. Back-and-forth early in the fifth set the Conqs then put together a run leading 13-9 on the way to taking the set 15-10 to earn the match win.

Hayden Pinard orchestrated the offense for the Conqs at the setter position recording 47 assists and finishing with a double-double notching 11 digs; it's the third time this season Pinard has had 40+ assists. Beatriz Lampugnani Cornachini had a strong night with 18 kills, eight digs, four block assists, and three aces. Tess De Zanet chipped in a double-double with 14 kills and 15 digs, while Leisey Keli'i had 13 digs and three aces.

The Conqs are back in action on Saturday, October 14th when they host Seward County at 6:30 pm.
