For the first time since 2014, the Dodge City men's soccer program has earned a victory over Cowley, and it comes when the Tigers are ranked #5 in the nation. The Conquistadors utilized a first-half goal to grab the 1-0 win.
The victory snaps a 10-match losing streak to Cowley and is the first win over the Tigers since 2014 and the first at home against the Tigers since 2013. The Conqs are now 7-3-2 on the season and 4-3-2 in KJCCC action with four matches left in the season.
Back-and-forth the Conqs would go with Cowley in the first half with each team getting a few chances but both teams were unable to break through on the scoreboard. Finally, in the 23rd minute, the Conqs would break through as Theo Hoang found Arthur Lemeunier who would tally his third goal of the season giving the Conqs a 1-0 lead. Eric Zalaya would make a pair of great saves in the first half along with the Conqs defense to keep the Tigers off the board. The second half would see the Tigers record 10 shots, but the Conqs again continued to stymie the Tigers managing to keep them off the board with a big save late from Daniel Ruiz who subbed in at goalie with 17 minutes remaining. The Conqs would shut out the third-highest goal-scoring offense in the nation for a 1-0 win.
In the victory, Cowley would outshoot the Conqs 17-9 but the Conqs took advantage of their opportunities to snag the win. The 17 shots by Cowley are their third-lowest shot output in a match this season as they lead the country in shots per game at 24.4 entering the matchup with the Conqs.
Four games remain for the Conqs as they will travel to Garden City on Wednesday, October 11th at 6:00 pm to continue the season.
