Volleyball Falls in Five Sets to Rival Garden City

October 04, 2023

Box Score

For the second straight match, the Dodge City volleyball team went to five sets in a KJCCC battle but the struggles continued for the Conquistadors as Garden City grabbed the win in five sets, 23-25, 25-18, 21-25, 25-14, 12-15.

The loss drops the Conqs to 12-11 on the season and 3-5 in KJCCC play as the Conqs have fallen in four of the last five matches.

After Garden City worked to an early 6-3 advantage in the first the Conqs would go back and forth with the Broncbusters until the Conqs worked to an 18-13 lead. That lead was flipped on its head as Garden City mounted an 11-2 run to work to set point and ultimately grab the first set 25-23. The Conqs would have a strong response in the second set working to an early lead and going up 17-10 forcing a Garden City timeout. The lead would hold up for the Conqs in the second set as they grabbed the set 25-18. Set three was much like the first going back and forth and saw a late push by Garden City behind four aces guiding the Broncbusters to the third set 25-21. In need of a set win to stay alive in the match, the Conqs came out hot in the fourth set going up 4-1 early, and then worked to a 12-4 lead and even went up 20-8 before winning the set 25-14. Onward the matchup went to a fifth set where the Conqs saw Garden City take early control working to an 8-3 lead and the Conqs despite some solid effort would be unable to come back in the set falling 15-12.

Tess De Zanet had a double-double for the Conqs recording 19 kills with 18 digs, while adding four aces. Agnes Hegardt and one of her best matches of the season with 14 kills, adding four digs and three block assists. Caitlyn Sonday added eight kills, while Madison Wallman finished with six kills and 12 digs. Sierra Scanlan finished with a double-double with 51 assists and 10 digs, while Lesiey Keli'i had her ninth match of the season with 20+ digs finishing with 21. Jahaziel Alualu-Talamoa had a strong match off the bench with five kills and 10 digs.

The Conqs have a quick turnaround as they will take on the Broncbusters again on Wednesday, October 4th this time in Garden City at 6:30 pm.
