October 18, 2023

Box Score

For the seventh time this season and the fifth time in the last seven matches the Dodge City volleyball team went five sets with an opponent and despite winning the first two sets the Conquistadors saw Cloud County comeback and win the match in five sets 25-23, 25-21, 21-25, 22-25, 11-15.

The loss drops the Conqs to 14-14 on the season and 5-8 in KJCCC play with three matches remaining in the regular season with all three at home.

After back-and-forth 3-0 runs each to open the night in the first set the Conqs would trail 22-17 late in the first but mount the comeback. The Conqs put together a 7-0 run to swing the momentum their way and hold a 24-22 lead in the first set and ultimately finished the first set out on an 8-1 run overall to grab it 25-23. Set two saw Cloud County take the early lead again going up 6-2 but it would tighten up as the set progressed being tied several times until the Conqs strung together a 4-0 run to lead 22-18 and used that to earn the second set 25-21. To open the third set the Conqs jumped up early lead 8-4 and then 12-6 but that lead would dissipate, and Cloud County came back to win the third set 25-21. In the fourth set, it would be much of the same back-and-forth play from the night overall until Cloud County once again had a late run to snatch the fourth set 25-22. Tied 2-2 in the match the contest would go to a fifth set and the Thunderbirds of Cloud County jumped up 7-3 in the fifth and would keep the Conqs at arm's length on their way to the 15-11 set win to take the match.

A trio of Conqs tallied double-figure kills on the night as Tess De Zanet finished with 19 kills and a career-high 21 digs for her eighth double-double of the season.
