Volleyball Loses Tough Five Set Contest With Hutchinson

At home for only the third time this season, the Dodge City volleyball team hosted Hutchinson for a KJCCC clash as the two did battle for the second time this season. 

The Conquistadors would start the match strong winning the first two sets, but Hutchinson responded, and the Blue Dragons stormed back to take the next two sets pushing the match to the fifth set which Hutchinson snatched the match with a fifth set win (25-21, 25-20, 16-25, 14-25, 10-15). 

After a tight start to the match, the Conqs would be able to grab the lead firmly in the first set midway through the set going up by as many as four points and earning the 25-21 set win. Set two saw a blistering start for the Conqs going up 5-1 and then 7-2 when Hutchinson called a timeout. The Conqs would continue to have success in the second set winning it 25-20. The third set saw Hutchinson jump up 4-1 and then 8-4 and the lead grew over the course of the set as the Blue Dragons flew to a third set win 25-16. Momentum continued for Hutchinson in the fourth set as the Blue Dragons jumped out fast again and would cruise to the fourth set 25-15. Now in a fifth and decisive set, the Conqs quickly fell behind again as Hutchinson went up 7-0 to open the set and despite fending off set point multiple times late the Conqs were unable to overcome the slow start to the set falling 15-10 to see Hutchinson take the match 3-2. 

In the loss, the Conqs had 56 kills with 14 from Tess De Zanet, while Beatriz Lampugnani Cornachini added 12 kills with seven digs. Agnes Hegardt tallied 10 kills, five digs, and three blocks, while Sierra Scanlan chipped in 10 kills along with eight digs and had 33 assists. Leisey Keli'i picked up two late aces in the fifth set for the Conqs finishing with four and had 26 digs, while Madison Wallman finished 13 digs, adding four kills, and two block assists. Hayden Pinard helped orchestra some of the Conq offense recording 21 assists and adding seven digs. 

The loss moves the Conqs to 12-10 on the season and 3-4 in KJCCC play. Up next the Conqs are back in action on Tuesday, October 3rd at home against Garden City at 6:30 pm.
